Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2 Teaser Trailer Analysis

In this blog post I  will be analysing the techniques and effects used in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two teaser trailer and try and relate them to techniques that I may need to use/know when creating the teaser trailer

Harry Potter is a globally successful film and owns a huge fan base so is able to create an amazing promotional package for its fans and people who may be interested in watching the films. These include trailers, teaser trailers, posters, large premieres, Facebook pages and so forth.

This teaser trailer uses a variety of different techniques that portray the genre of the film, the target audience and gives the audience a glimpse into what the film will be about. It also shows the different special effects that will be used in the film like dragons flying around, or Hogwarts being protected by a spell- shield and this makes the film stand out from a lot of its other competitors as it has a large budget which allows them to use many outstanding special effects.

The teaser trailer clearly demonstrates that the two main genres of the film are action, as shown by the fast paced cut editing teamed with energetic music, and fantasy, as demonstrated by the special effects and props used on screen like when Harry and Voldermort have a duel with their wands.

The target audience is visible when watching this trailer as it uses dark lighting and includes quite a lot of violence so it illustrates that it is aimed for people between the ages of 15 and 25 and not for young children.

When watching this teaser trailer I found that the institutional information (Warner Bros Pictures) was shown at the beginning of the trailer and the title of the film and the release date were at the end. I think that this is effective as it encourages people to watch till the very end of the trailer to see what the film is called, if they like the look of the trailer, and also it reminds the audience who produced the film, advertising the organisation.
All of the characters that play a main role in the film are shown during this trailer and I found that the ones with the most screen time are the protagonist, Harry Potter, and the antagonist, Voldermort. This lets the audience know that they are the main focus of the film and the character's future all comes down to their actions during this film.
The mise-en-scene of the trailer clearly shows to the audience what type of world they are entering and helps their imagination follow the storyline. The costumes for Voldermort is a stereotypical wizarding outfit as it consists of a long black robe, although for some of the other wizards like Harry, Ron and Hermione their costumes go against what the audience would class as 'wizard clothing' as they wear everyday casual outfits. Also the props and the setting/ location indicates the wizarding theme as wands are used by the characters and it is mainly set in an old castle
